A Republican lawmaker in Maine accused of choking his wife last month won re-election by a single vote after a Thursday recount.

According to the recount results, Lanigan received 2,478 votes while Kidder received 2,477 votes. Election officials said 424 ballots were still deemed to be blank following the recount.

In November 1819, the former president said in a letter that he found the proposed state constitution was marked with wisdom at every point with one exception.

Maine is one of a handful of states that use Ranked Choice Voting, where voters rank in order of preference who they would like to see win. In this case, when the bottom candidates were eliminated, their votes were reallocated to their second and third choices until a remaining candidate received over 50 percent.

PORTLAND, Maine — Democratic Rep. Jared Golden won reelection to Congress through Maine’s ranked choice system on Friday. It’s the third time in four elections in the hotly contested district that Golden won after votes were retabulated because first choices failed to produce a majority for any candidate.

PORTLAND (WGME) -- A Maine lawmaker is looking to change the rules when it comes to blank ballots to avoid a situation the ranked choice tabulation in Maine's Second District this year.

Representative Jared Golden, a three-term Democrat, defeated Austin Theriault, a former NASCAR driver, in one of a handful of districts held by Democrats that Donald J. Trump won in 2020.

Golden, the Democratic incumbent, was re-elected in Maine's ranked-choice system, which is similar to Alaska's current system.
