At just 18 years old, Gukesh is setting out on an ambitious journey to become the youngest world chess champion in history. He faces Ding Liren at Singapore's Resorts World Sentosa in a championship that traces its roots back to 1886.

Ding Liren officially lost to D Gukesh on time in the Round 3 of World Chess Championship 2024, but it was the 18-year-old Indian Grandmaster’s excellent preparation and confident game that allowed him to win his first match.

Gukesh earned a whopping Rs 1.68 crore paycheque as per the regulations in place for the World Chess Championship 2024, as decided by the global governing body of chess, FIDE.

The world’s youngest World Championship challenger, India’s D. Gukesh, made a strong comeback, handing defending champion China’s Ding Liren his first loss of the FIDE World Chess Championship 2024 in the third round at the Resorts World Sentosa in Singapore on Wednesday.

Every win in the World Championship 2024 will provide D Gukesh an opportunity to add close to Rs crore in Indian rupees to his bank account. Overall, Gukesh could earn more than Rs 10 crore in prize money at World Chess Championship 2024.

The 18-year-old triumphed in the third game of the series on Wednesday, drawing level after his opening-round loss.

D Gukesh registered his first-ever win against the defending champion Ding Liren from China in the World Chess Championship.

With 40 moves to make in the first 120 allotted minutes without any increment, the complicated middle game had the desired impact on Liren and Gukesh was relentless in finding out some difficult yet perfect moves to increase the pressure.
